N-type TOPCon vs PERC: What Changes on an Indian Site

Most new utility and C&I projects in India are moving from PERC to N-type TOPCon modules. The reasons are practical: Indian sites are hot, projects run for decades, and every percent of yield shows up in the tariff. Here is what actually changes.

Heat: a lower temperature coefficient

Module output falls as cell temperature rises. Kern 132 modules have a Pmax temperature coefficient of −0.30 %/°C (G12) or −0.29 %/°C (G12R). At 65 °C cell temperature, a Kern module retains roughly 88% of rated power, against about 86% for a PERC module.

Across a year in central India, that difference alone is worth more than a percent of yield.

Degradation: more power in year 30

Kern 132 modules carry a 30-year performance warranty: 1% degradation in the first year, 0.40% per year thereafter, and 87.4% of rated output at year 30. A 12-year product and workmanship warranty sits alongside it.

Bifacial gain from the rear side

Kern 132 modules are bifacial and glass-glass, with a bifaciality of 80 ± 5%. Light reflected from the ground adds output from the rear side. As a rule of thumb, the gain is about 0.32 × albedo: around 8% over dry, light soil and around 21% over a white membrane roof.

Real gains depend on row spacing, mounting height, tracker type and soiling, so treat these as estimates, not a warranty.

Built for Indian conditions

Glass-glass construction and testing matter as much as the cell technology:

  • Mechanical load: 5400 Pa snow and 2400 Pa wind
  • Maximum system voltage 1500 V DC, with PID resistance tested to IEC 62804
  • Salt mist, ammonia, sand and dust tested to IEC 61701, IEC 62716 and IEC 60068
  • IP68 junction box

FAQs

On hot rooftops the lower temperature coefficient and lower degradation usually pay back over the project life. On white membrane roofs, bifacial gain adds further yield.

A 12-year product and workmanship warranty and a 30-year performance warranty, with 87.4% of rated output at year 30.

Yes. Both Kern 132 formats are N-type TOPCon, bifacial and glass-glass, with 80 ± 5% bifaciality.
