For many Indian solar projects, the first question is no longer which module is the most efficient, but which module you are allowed to use. From 1 January 2027, projects under government schemes, net-metering and open access must use ALMM List-I modules built with ALMM List-II (domestic) cells. Here is what that means in practice.
What ALMM and DCR mean
The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) is maintained by MNRE. List-I covers solar modules; List-II covers solar cells. A module is "DCR" (Domestic Content Requirement) when it is an ALMM List-I module made with cells from List-II, in other words with Indian-made cells.
List-I enlistment attaches to a specific model and a specific cell source. That is why the same module family can exist in a DCR variant and a non-DCR variant.
Which projects need DCR modules
From 1 January 2027, projects under government schemes, net-metering and open access must use ALMM List-I modules built with ALMM List-II cells. For these projects the cell source decides which module SKU you can use.
Projects outside these routes, for example certain exempt, private or export projects, can use non-DCR modules. Always verify the current MNRE list and rules for your project’s commissioning date.
How Lumikern supplies both
Both Kern 132 formats, G12 (700–720 Wp) and G12R (605–640 Wp), are available in DCR and non-DCR variants. The DCR variant uses ALMM List-II cells and is subject to allocation; the non-DCR variant serves exempt, private and export projects.
Questions to ask before you bid
Before you price a project, get clear answers to these from your module supplier:
- Which exact SKUs and power classes are DCR-eligible, and from which date?
- What cell allocation can be committed for your commissioning window?
- What is the measured Pmax distribution of the lot you are buying, not just the nameplate?
- Can the supplier support the bankability review with type-test reports, reliability data and factory audit access?
